About

Provides detailed trip records for the Los Angeles Metro Bike Share service, covering the period from the third quarter of 2016 through the third quarter of 2021. The system, administered by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), operates approximately 1,400 bikes and 93 stations primarily serving Downtown Los Angeles, Venice, and the Port of Los Angeles. The raw quarterly datasets have been combined and subjected to rigorous cleaning procedures to enhance data quality for analysis. Data standardisation involved converting all time units to consistent minutes and ensuring uniform date formats. Key exclusions were made for trips exceeding eight hours, staff testing entries (identified by specific plan_duration values 999, 150, and blank), and movements involving virtual station ID "3000." This dataset also incorporates calculated measurements of the taxicab distance between the starting and ending station locations.

Columns

  • trip_id: A locally unique integer identifier for the journey.
  • duration: The recorded length of the trip, measured in minutes. Trip durations range from a minimum of 1 minute up to 479 minutes, with a mean duration of 24.1 minutes.
  • start_time: The date and time when the trip began, presented in dd/mm/yyyy format.
  • end_time: The date and time when the trip ended, presented in dd/mm/yyyy format.
  • bike_id: A locally unique integer identifying the specific bicycle used.
  • trip_route_category: Categorises the trip as "One Way" (different start and end stations) or "Round Trip" (same start and end stations). "One Way" constitutes the most frequent category.
  • plan_duration: The number of days the passholder’s plan permits riding. A value of 0 is used for single ride plans, such as Walk-up.
  • passholder_type: The name of the passholder’s plan (e.g., Monthly Pass, which represents 58% of recorded trips).
  • bike_type: The kind of bicycle utilised, including standard pedal-powered, electric-assist, and smart bikes. A category exists for bikes modified from standard to smart ("standard/smart").
  • start_station: The ID of the station where the journey originated.
  • end_station: The ID of the station where the journey terminated.
  • start_lat: The latitude coordinate of the starting station.
  • start_lon: The longitude coordinate of the starting station.
  • end_lat: The latitude coordinate of the termination station.
  • end_lon: The longitude coordinate of the termination station.
  • taxicab_distance: The taxicab distance, calculated using taxicab geometry, between the start and end locations.

Distribution

The dataset is available as a CSV file named LA_Metro_BikeSharing_CLEANED_2016quater3-2021q3.csv, with a file size of 180.26 MB. It contains 16 columns of cleaned mobility data. There are approximately 1.25 million valid trip records. No further updates are expected for this version of the dataset.

Usage

This resource is highly valuable for geographical and temporal analysis of shared bicycle usage within Los Angeles. Potential applications include:
  • Analysing urban cycling behaviour and evaluating usage patterns based on passholder type.
  • Modelling demand fluctuations across the system's 93 stations.
  • Conducting spatial analysis and route efficiency studies utilizing the provided taxicab distance metric.
  • Investigating the impact of bike type (standard versus electric) on trip characteristics.

Coverage

The dataset covers the Los Angeles metropolitan area served by the Metro Bike Share system, specifically Downtown Los Angeles, Venice, and the Port of Los Angeles. The time range spans from Quarter 3 of 2016 through Quarter 3 of 2021. Data cleaning efforts ensured consistency in passholder definitions, for example, Flex Pass entries were assigned to the Annual Pass category, and duration inconsistencies for Walk-up pass types were corrected to One Day Pass entries where appropriate.
