About

Provides detailed on-screen time metrics for characters appearing across various Marvel films and television titles. The data is structured as a sparse matrix, relating characters (rows) to movie titles (columns). Non-null entries quantify the duration a character is visibly present on screen, estimated to the nearest quarter-minute. This product is valuable for analysing character prominence and narrative focus within the cinematic universe.

Columns

The main data file, mcu_movie_character_screen_time.csv, contains 31 columns and 143 rows.
  • Character: The official name of the movie character. This column is 100% valid with 143 unique values. The most common entry is Tony Stark.
  • Alternate Name: Secondary or alternative names associated with the character. This field is highly sparse, with 87% of values missing. The most common valid entry is Iron Man.
  • Movie Columns (e.g., Avengers_Endgame, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness): These columns track screen time in minutes and seconds for the character in that specific title. Entries are mostly null (for example, Eternals is 97% missing), which indicates non-appearance or negligible screen time.
A secondary file, movie_times.csv, provides the running length in minutes, release year, and release month for each included film.

Distribution

The product is distributed across two related CSV files containing Marvel Character Screen Time metrics. The primary file, mcu_movie_character_screen_time.csv, is 8.28 kB and holds 143 rows. Data is supplied in a structured sparse matrix format. The expected update frequency for this product is quarterly.

Usage

  • Analysing character prominence and popularity across the cinematic universe timeline.
  • Supporting academic or media research on narrative structures and screenwriting.
  • Tracking the evolution of character roles across sequels and crossover events.
  • Quantifying on-screen presence against film runtime and profitability metrics.

Coverage

This dataset measures screen time for 143 distinct characters across a selection of Marvel films and television titles. The time range includes early titles such as The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man, as well as recent releases like Spider-Man No Way Home. It should be noted that the screen time data for Venom (2018) is entirely absent, showing 100% null values.
