This dataset compiles information on foundation shades available globally, specifically from brands sold in the US, Nigeria, Japan, and India. It was gathered to explore the range of shades offered by various beauty brands, including Fenty Beauty, and was originally utilised in "The Pudding" essay "Beauty Brawl" published in June 2018. The data includes hexadecimal colour codes and lightness values for liquid foundation shades identified as having the largest number of available shades from "best-selling" brands in their respective home countries.

Columns

  • brand: The name of the beauty brand (e.g., Maybelline, Estée Lauder).
  • brand_short: A shortened name for the beauty brand (e.g., mb, el).
  • product: The name of the best-selling product line from which shades were sampled (e.g., Double Wear, Studio Fix).
  • product_short: A shortened name for the product line (e.g., dw, sff).
  • hex: The hexadecimal colour code for a specific shade, without the leading '#' symbol.
  • H: The hue value of the shade.
  • S: The saturation value of the shade.
  • V: The value component of the shade.
  • L: The lightness value of the shade, derived using the CIE Lab colour model.
  • group: A categorisation of the data based on brand or country. This includes specific categories for Fenty Beauty's PRO FILT'R Foundation, Make Up For Ever's Ultra HD Foundation, US Best Sellers, BIPOC-recommended Brands with BIPOC Founders, BIPOC-recommended Brands with White Founders, Nigerian Best Sellers, Japanese Best Sellers, and Indian Best Sellers.

The dataset is provided in a CSV format, named shades.csv, with a size of approximately 39.85 KB. It comprises 10 columns and contains 625 individual records or rows.
