This dataset provides details on all Japanese Shinkansen (Bullet Train) stations. Shinkansen is a highly popular mode of public transport in Japan, with numerous stations across the country. The data offers insights into the network, which runs from north to south, and includes information about stations belonging to various lines and JR companies. The dataset was updated on 9th May 2023 to include the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, which commenced operation in September 2022. It is an invaluable resource for understanding Japan's high-speed rail infrastructure.
Columns
- Name: The name of the station in English.
- Line: The Shinkansen line to which the station belongs. Japan has nine Shinkansen lines, including Hokkaido, Tohoku, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen.
- Year: The year when the station officially opened. Station opening years range from 1964, when the first Shinkansen (Tokaido) opened, up to 2022.
- Prefecture: The Japanese prefecture where each Shinkansen station is situated.
- Distance from Tokyo st: The distance in kilometres from Tokyo Station to the respective station. For the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, this distance is calculated as the sum of the distance from Tokyo Station to Shin-Tosu Station (Shinkansen) and the distance from Shin-Tosu Station to Takeo Onsen Station (Conventional Line).
- Company: The Japan Railway (JR) company that operates the station. There are seven JR companies, of which all except JR Shikoku and JR Freight operate Shinkansen stations.
