Incidents where an individual's death occurred during an encounter with law enforcement officials are documented here. Created by Fatal Encounters, the records include cases of police homicide, such as when an officer shoots a person presenting a lethal threat, as well as other scenarios where police are involved. Examples of these non-homicide incidents include fatal vehicle crashes during police chases or suicides that occur during barricade situations.

Columns

  • Unique ID: A unique identifier for each incident.
  • Name: The name of the deceased individual.
  • Age: The age of the deceased individual.
  • Gender: The gender of the deceased individual.
  • Race: The race of the deceased individual.
  • URL of image: A URL link to an image of the deceased, if available.
  • Date of injury resulting in death (month/day/year): The date the fatal injury occurred.
  • Location of injury (address): The street address where the fatal injury occurred.
  • Location of death (city): The city where the death occurred.
  • State: The state where the death occurred.
  • Location of death (zip code): The zip code where the death occurred.

  • Agency or agencies involved: The law enforcement agency or agencies involved in the incident.
  • Highest level of force: The most significant level of force used in the encounter.
  • Alleged weapon: The weapon allegedly possessed by the individual.
  • Aggressive physical movement: Describes any aggressive physical actions by the individual.
  • Fleeing/Not fleeing: Indicates whether the individual was fleeing.
  • Description Temp: A temporary descriptive field for the incident.
  • URL Temp: A temporary URL field related to the incident.
  • Brief description: A brief narrative of the incident.
  • Dispositions/Exclusions INTERNAL USE, NOT FOR ANALYSIS: An internal field for dispositions or exclusions, not intended for public analysis.
  • Intended use of force (Developing): A developing field describing the intended level of force.
  • Supporting document link: A URL to a supporting document.
  • Foreknowledge of mental illness: Indicates if there was prior knowledge of the individual's mental illness.
