About

Presents an aggregate view of COVID-19 pathology test totals and persons tested within Queensland, Australia, broken down by the collection date of the sample and the location of the tested individual’s usual residence, defined by Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2) and Hospital and Health Services Area (HHS). The information is aggregated from Queensland's Notifiable Conditions System (NoCS) and includes results from Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent (igG igM Reactive Serology), and suck-swab assays. This dataset is a valuable resource for monitoring regional testing patterns and population exposure rates during the specified time period. The data incorporated results from the Queensland Public RAT Portal as of March 2023, following re-evaluation within NoCS to integrate potential duplicates appropriately.

Columns

  • RESIDENCE_SA2: The nine-digit code for the Statistical Area Level 2 where the tested individual usually resides. These codes are sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2016 (ABS 3218.0).
  • RESIDENCE_SA2_NAME: The corresponding name of the Statistical Area Level 2 region, also sourced from the ABS 2016 publication. There are 524 unique SA2 names, with Maroochydore - Kuluin being a frequently represented area.
  • HHS: Identifies the Queensland Hospital and Health Services Area (HHS) statutory body where the tested individual usually resides. There are 15 unique HHS areas, with METRO SOUTH being the most common category (22%).
  • ERP_2021: The Estimated Residential Population (ERP) for the SA2, sourced from the ABS Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2022 (ABS 3218.0).
  • COLLECTDATE: The specific date on which the sample was collected.
  • PRSN_TESTED: A count of distinct individuals who have undergone testing for SARS-CoV-2 one or more times, categorised by the day of sample collection and the individual's Queensland residence location. The count ranges up to 1250 individuals.
  • DAILY_SA2_TEST_TOTAL: A count of the total COVID-19 pathology tests performed, grouped by the day of sample collection and the individual’s residence location within Queensland. The total test count also ranges up to 1250.

Distribution

The dataset is provided as a CSV file (opendata_qld_covidtests_sa2.csv) with a file size of 19.19 MB. It consists of 7 columns. The dataset contains approximately 323,000 valid records. A small percentage of records (212) have missing values for the SA2 and ERP fields. The expected update frequency for this data product is Never.

Usage

This dataset is ideal for use in public health modelling and epidemiological studies. It can be used for spatial analysis of disease prevalence across Queensland's regions. Researchers can examine the correlation between Estimated Residential Population (ERP) and testing rates. Policymakers can utilise the data to assess the efficiency and distribution of testing resources across different Hospital and Health Services (HHS) areas over time.

Coverage

The geographical scope covers Queensland, Australia, focusing on regional divisions at the SA2 level. The data begins tracking pathology tests collected from 1 June 2021 onwards. Note that location variables (SA2/HHS) are masked as null if the tested individual does not usually reside in Queensland. Furthermore, SA2 data was not generated on pathology tests prior to the June 2021 update of the Queensland’s Notifiable Conditions System.

Who Can Use It

  • Epidemiologists: For tracking regional SARS-CoV-2 testing trends and rates per capita.
  • Public Health Authorities: To evaluate testing strategies and resource allocation based on SA2 and HHS areas.
  • Data Scientists: For developing predictive models related to population density (ERP) and testing demand.
  • Journalists and Researchers: For studying the spatial distribution of public health responses in Queensland.
