About

The World Happiness Report dataset, covering the period from 2005 to the present, is a significant publication by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network. This dataset aims to address the worldwide demand for greater attention to happiness and well-being as key criteria for government policy. It provides a review of the current state of happiness across the globe and illustrates how the science of happiness helps to explain variations in well-being at both personal and national levels. The rankings within the report are founded on individuals' self-assessments of their lives, specifically their responses to the Cantril ladder life-evaluation question from the Gallup World Poll data, which powers the report.

Columns

  • Country Name: Identifies the specific country for each record. There are 165 unique countries represented.
  • Regional Indicator: Categorises countries by their respective regions, with 10 unique regional groups, such as Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and Caribbean.
  • Year: Indicates the year the data was collected, ranging from 2005 to 2022.
  • Life Ladder: This is the dependent variable, representing individuals' life evaluations on a scale from 0 to 10. Scores range from 1.28 to 8.02.
  • Log GDP Per Capita: An independent variable, measured in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) adjusted to constant 2017 international dollars. This is sourced from the World Development Indicators by the World Bank. The natural log of GDP per capita is used for a better fit.
  • Social Support: An independent variable (0-1) reflecting the national average of binary responses to the Gallup World Poll question about having relatives or friends to count on in times of trouble.
  • Healthy Life Expectancy At Birth: An independent variable constructed from World Health Organization (WHO) data. It covers expected healthy life years, with values ranging up to 74.5.
  • Freedom To Make Life Choices: An independent variable (0-1) representing the national average of binary responses to the Gallup World Poll question regarding satisfaction with freedom to choose what to do with one's life.
  • Generosity: An independent variable derived from the residual of regressing responses to a Gallup World Poll donation question on log GDP per capita.
  • Perceptions Of Corruption: An independent variable (0-1) reflecting the average of binary answers to Gallup World Poll questions on the perceived prevalence of corruption within government and businesses.
  • Positive Affect: An independent variable defined as the average of previous-day measures for feelings such such as laughter, enjoyment, and interest.
  • Negative Affect: An independent variable defined as the average of previous-day measures for feelings such as worry, sadness, and anger.
  • Confidence In National Government: Measures the level of confidence citizens have in their national government, with scores ranging from 0.07 to 0.99.
