About

This dataset provides clinical, metabolic, and outcome data related to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). It originates from a population study that tracked subjects diagnosed with NAFLD, alongside a matched control group, to observe the progression of metabolic conditions, cardiac endpoints, and mortality. The incidence of NAFLD has significantly increased, making it a primary focus in hepatology, closely associated with the global obesity epidemic. While NAFLD involves excess fat in the liver, a subset of patients may develop Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), which can lead to severe liver damage. The study cohort comprises adult NAFLD subjects identified between 1997 and 2014. To ensure patient privacy, all time intervals are presented in days from an index date, and only a 90% random sample of the original data is included.

Columns

The dataset is structured across three distinct data files:
nafld1 (Baseline Data)
  • id: Unique identifier for each subject.
  • age: Subject's age at the study's entry.
  • male: Binary indicator where 0 represents female and 1 represents male.
  • weight: Subject's weight measured in kilograms.
  • height: Subject's height measured in centimetres.
  • bmi: Body Mass Index of the subject.
  • case.id: Identifier linking the subject to their matched NAFLD case.
  • futime: The duration, in days, until either death or the last recorded follow-up.
  • status: Outcome status, with 0 indicating alive at last follow-up and 1 indicating deceased.
nafld2 (Laboratory Data)
  • id: Unique identifier for each subject.
  • days: Number of days elapsed since the index date.
  • test: Denotes the specific type of laboratory value recorded.
  • value: The numerical result of the laboratory test.
nafld3 (Outcomes Data)
  • id: Unique identifier for each subject.
  • days: Number of days elapsed since the index date.
  • event: Description of the clinical endpoint or event that occurred.

Distribution

The data is available in CSV format. It is distributed across three separate data files: nafld1 contains 17,549 observations with 10 variables, nafld2 includes 400,123 observations with 4 variables, and nafld3 has 34,340 observations with 3 variables. The nafld1.csv file has a size of 897.31 KB.

Usage

This dataset is ideally suited for researchers and analysts interested in:
  • Analysing the clinical progression of NAFLD and its associated complications.
  • Investigating the relationship between metabolic conditions, cardiac health, and liver disease.
  • Studying mortality outcomes in NAFLD patient populations.
  • Developing predictive models for disease onset or adverse events in individuals with or at risk of NAFLD.
  • Conducting epidemiological studies on the prevalence and impact of NAFLD within a defined cohort.

Coverage

The dataset covers a population cohort of adult subjects with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. The study period ranges from 1997 to 2014. Demographic scope includes both male and female participants, with ages recorded at the time of study entry. Specific geographic coverage is not detailed, but it represents a population study. All time intervals are anonymised and presented as days since an index date to protect patient confidentiality. The dataset represents a 90% random sample of the original study data.

Who Can Use It

  • Medical Researchers: For studying disease progression, identifying risk factors, and understanding clinical outcomes of NAFLD.
  • Public Health Professionals: To inform public health strategies related to liver disease, obesity, and metabolic health.
  • Epidemiologists: For analysing disease incidence, prevalence, and cohort-specific trends.
  • Data Scientists/Analysts: To build predictive models, perform statistical analysis, and uncover patterns within large-scale clinical data.
  • Healthcare Policy Makers: To understand the burden of NAFLD and inform resource allocation for liver disease management.
