About
This dataset presents suicide rates for various countries across different years, compiled from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other authoritative sources. Globally, approximately one person in 5,000 to 15,000 dies by suicide annually, with a worldwide rate estimated at 10.5 per 100,000 population, a decrease from 11.6 in 2008. In high-income, modernised nations, significant differences exist in suicidal behaviours between genders; women are reported to have more suicidal thoughts, yet suicide rates are higher among men, a trend often termed a 'silent epidemic'. A 2019 study indicated a one-third decline in global age-standardised suicide rates between 1990 and 2016. In 2016, rates were about 16 deaths per 100,000 men and 7 deaths per 100,000 women, with women experiencing a greater reduction during the study period.
