About

This resource details the official list of Jôyô kanji, which are the common-use characters designated by the Japanese Ministry of Education that every adult citizen is expected to master. It serves as a foundational reference for anyone engaging in language study and is a critical tool for understanding the standardized Japanese writing system.

Columns

The dataset contains seven distinct fields:
  • ID: A numerical identifier assigned to the specific kanji character.
  • new: The kanji character in its modern shinjitai form, following the revision adopted in 1946.
  • old: The kanji in its older kyûjita form, present only when it differs from the modern shinjitai version. Note that this field has missing values for 83% of the entries.
  • radical: The defining radical of the kanji, which is the component used for character classification in traditional dictionaries.
  • strokes: The total number of strokes required to correctly write the kanji, with values ranging from 1 to 29.
  • grade: The educational grade level in which the kanji is taught in Japanese Elementary schools (Grades 1 through 6). Characters taught in secondary school are designated with 'S,' which is the most frequent value.
  • year_added: The specific year the kanji was officially added to the list, applied only if the addition occurred after the original 1946 designation. This field is absent for 86% of the records.

Distribution

The data is provided in a CSV file named joyo_kanji.csv. The file size is 45.19 kB and contains 7 columns. The structure consists of 2136 valid records detailing each of the Jôyô kanji.

Usage

This data is ideal for various applications, particularly those focused on language instruction and linguistic analysis. It can be used to develop educational flashcard applications, build digital dictionaries incorporating radical classification, or for academic research examining the structure and educational prioritisation of kanji characters within the Japanese school system.

Coverage

The scope includes all characters on the official Jôyô kanji list, representing the standard curriculum defined by the Japanese Ministry of Education. The underlying data spans from the establishment of the modern list in 1946 through subsequent additions, with noted additions occurring between 1981 and 2010. Geographically, the data pertains specifically to the educational standards of Japan.
