This collection features over 51,000 unique tweets posted on 8 March 2021, focusing on discussions related to International Women's Day. The data was gathered to help researchers understand the societal issues women are highlighting, and what subjects are most frequently discussed on the occasion of the holiday. All tweets included are original posts (not retweets) written in the English language and contain the relevant IWD hashtag.
Columns
The dataset contains 12 attributes per record:
- id: The unique identifier assigned to the tweet.
- replyToUID: The user ID of the person to whom the tweet is responding.
- text: The full content of the tweet.
- favoriteCount: The total number of "likes" the tweet received (averaging 3.3).
- replyToSN: The screen name of the user being responded to.
- created: The date and time (UTC) the tweet was published.
- truncated: A boolean value indicating if the tweet was shortened to the first 140 characters (approximately 71% of tweets are marked as true).
- replyToSID: The ID of the specific tweet to which the post is a response.
- screenName: The user nick/handle of the individual posting the tweet (with over 44,000 unique screen names).
- retweetCount: The number of times the tweet was retweeted (averaging 0.8).
- longitude: Geographic longitude in degrees (almost entirely unavailable).
- latitude: Geographic latitude in degrees (almost entirely unavailable).
Distribution
The dataset, packaged as IWD.csv (11.02 MB), contains 51,487 records. Data acquisition utilised the Twitter API and the R programming language via the "twitteR" package.
Usage
Ideal applications involve text mining and social network analysis. Users can explore questions such as determining the major topics addressed on Women's Day or identifying specific problems that modern women are paying special attention to within the social sphere.
Coverage
The data capture focuses exclusively on tweets published on 8 March 2021. The content is limited to posts written in English and must contain the InternationalWomensDay hashtag. Geographic location data (longitude and latitude) is largely missing from the records.
